With my selection of
images, I first began to put together what connected them and what could be
interesting to focus on within the book. These included:
- Subject of permanence
(what makes it permanent?) //
(Why is it important?) // (why this form of
type is used?)
- The elegance and
presence chiselled type has
- Erosion and its effects
on making each piece of stone
Type unique.
- The process of stone
based lettering and its history and
how it created most of the typography
terminology we
know and use today
With all of these, I knew
I wanted to incorporate stone within my book as it was something that hasn’t
been done before and it was a great way to show of the craft. With that said, I
asked my peers about the different content ideas I had and had a majority
suggest focusing on the history and process of stone based lettering which
personally was the one that I preferred out of the other ideas.
I began to research into
stone lettering and the techniques used but first I wanted to look if a book
using stone had been used before or if anything similar to it has been done. As
it happens, there was no examples of books incorporating stone but there were
some really interesting examples of books using wood that could help me come up
with how to go about using stone. One said example was that of Llibre Homenatge
that was designed by Petit Comite that used laser etched plywood blocks as the
cover and had the book bound to them using a mix of perfect bound and
constantina signatures being held together using Coptic binding. This really
inspired me to what was possible within what I wanted with my project. With
that said, wanted to create the book as a coffee table addition that designers
would want on their desk or at their studios and to do this, I want to create
something one of a kind that, if it was to be manufactured, would have a
limited run to make owners proud to have it on display.
