Pack Horse Pub:
The pack horse is a really interesting place to cover as its got so much history within Leeds being its oldest pub. this alone would be a great place to start in terms of designing a poster. A factor that helps me if i were to choose this as my event would be the fact that i work here part time as a bartender which has already given me insight on the history of the pub as some of the regulars have been drinking here for 70+ years and all have different stories of the building for instance, the wooden beams inside are the same beams from when it first opened and are listed by the council.
It opened in 1615 although there may have been a drinking house on the site in the sixteenth century; some say it goes back to the 1130s. In 1615, it was the Nag’s Head and then the Slip Inn from 1770. It was renovated in 1982 when fifteenth-century elements were discovered.
The Harrison Arms in Harrison Street and the Old George Commercial Hotel also bear a Templar cross.
There been debates about who is older between The Packhorse or Whitelocks pubs but there is in fact a 100 year difference as Whitelocks itself opened its doors in 1715 (source)
Leeds International Medieval Congress
The second choice is the Medieval congress. The idea of working around and incorporating medieval themes into my work is quite exciting to me. Designing for this event is something that stands out to me more as not many people have heard of it even though its got quite a large scope for its event, plus medieval themes are pretty cool to me
The International Medieval Congress (IMC) takes place every year in the second week of July at the University of Leeds. Begun in 1994, the Congress now attracts over 2000 medievalists from all over the world, making it the largest conference of its kind in Europe. The main aim of the Congress is to provide an interdisciplinary forum for discussion of all aspects of the European Middle Ages (c. 300-1500). Each year's Congress has a special thematic strand that focusses on an area of interdisciplinary study in a wider context. However, this focus is not exclusive and alongside it the IMC provides a platform for debate in all spheres of medieval research.
Drawing medievalists from over 50 countries, with over 1,900 individual papers and 630 academic sessions and a wide range of concerts, performances, readings, round tables, excursions, bookfair and associated events, the Leeds International Medieval Congress is Europe's largest annual gathering in the humanities.
