Public information leaflet

 Leaflet Design

Mock up design

Folding out option looks alright but its too big for what little information will be on it

Having it A4 size allows it to be used as a poster for the classroom and for kids to have it at home with out it being too big. the bottom tear away parts do look scruffy. Simon has suggested perforating it to allow it to look fine without each piece curling up like above

Started creating the Initial design for the leaflet while trying to keep with the style of current child information leaflets // posters. This requires the leaflets to have little information on it but make sure its understandable for the kids. also, with a study of how colour effects kids attention span and blue makes it so its more likely to be read where colours like yellow and red will grab their attention.
the first attempt at this seemed to be too plain and basic so i decided to go back to the drawing board and create a grid for the leaflet

New Grid System for leaflet

This is the latest design to the leaflet. Its been made to be folded 5 times so it can fit in pockets while also being doubled as a poster when it's unfolded. with it being used as a poster as well, I've decided to only print on one side of the paper as this would safe money on the print method as the bottom part of these leaflet will have Hi Visibility stickers on a perferated, tear away piece that students can pull off, handed out and put onto their bikes. The information has been made into points to allow the students to quickly read the poster. The bike on the poster was put on as an attempt to get the students to draw their dream bike design onto it to get a class to interact with their own leaflet and show it to their friends.

Final Piece

With the Poster // leaflet in its final stages i wenrt down to the print room to talk to the technition about what paper would be best. After discussion, we chose to use the paper Antalis Dlin Digital Reavlar High White 11209sm, as it was thick enough so it would be able to survive some wear and tear . The final peice looked great but unfortunatly, due to the papers properties, it wouldnt fold to well without it looking tacky. while this is the case, the paper works great as a poster and the perferated, tear away vinyl section at the bottom seems to be fine. there was a few spelling mistakes found after makeing the first draft of this but thankfully i was abe to sort it out before printing the final piece

Group Crit

“while it dose look basic, it dose fit its purpose to be aimed toward kids”
“The bright blue dose draw you in. it reminds me of the saftey posters we had back when i was in primary school”
“im not sure whether you need the ‘Follow these Basics’ part at the top. maybe try it without it”
“its got enough information to look serious while at the same time it dose look like its for kids”
"Just leave it as a poster"

Evaluation

I did struggle with this project as creating something for kids is harder than it looks. while ultimately the  poster looks basic, it fits it purpose as my peers stated. Its simplistic // bright design dose attract the attention of kids and is interactive enough to keep their attention. Not going to lie about it, i wish i chose a better public information video after seeing what other poeple have chosen as there isn't much excitement // danger with getting seen on a bike. while that is the case, i did enjoy this brief as i havent hand much experiece in layout design for leaflets, nor have i had experiance for creqating a design for younger kids. i look forward to doing more projects of this nature in the future as i feel its an area in graphics i enjoy.

Public information Leaflet

Sketches and ideas

With the tone of the video, i want to aim my leaflets to a younger audience. Specifically I want to aim these leaflets for the road safety lessons they give at primary schools for kids in year 5-6 and ultimately be used as an education tool for the leader of these sessions to be handed out to the participants.

The ideas were: Create a leaflet that could be doubled as a reflective piece for your bike. create a leaflet that the kids interactive with, for instance, stickers, colour in section.

Crit
  • The idea of stickers would work great for the chosen audience
  • The instructional idea of the leaflet could done great. look into the tone of voice
  • consider making the leaflet out of water proof paper from downstairs
  • maybe have the leaflet as something a teacher can put on a wall so the whole class can interact with it
  • include some tear away stickers on the leaflet

Public Information Leaflets

Research

z

All of these are existing examples of information leaflets and posters that are aimed towards kids, Each poster // leaflet contains information in points so there is no large body of text to discourage kids from reading the info. Most of these have a character or a cartoon on it to grab the kids attention, ill have to look into that for my design. The average Colour scheme for these seems to be light colours like blue, orange and then some out there colours to grab attention like yellow and red. with this, I've started to look at the psychological effects colour had on kids. (link)

to gain an understanding of how the mind of the kids work, I've researched into the behaviour and nature of them to gain an understanding of how the attention spawn works and what attracts them to information (link)

The advertising rules surrounding children are deliberately strict. This is because children are generally more credulous and lack the experience of adults to engage, critically assess and cope with commercial images and messages. With this,  you have to consider that too much info is bad as kids minds just switch off after seeing large bodies of text. Instead, make the information more engaging so the kid will want to read it. you can do this by making the text colourful , making it into smaller points or make a game from it. with the way kids minds work now days, the average attention span of them are between 10-20 seconds according to studies. So to work with that, you have to make your info quick and easy to read

Public Information leaflet study task

the Public Info video

With the given videos for this brief focusing on public safety, there is a overarching tone of voice in most of the videos which focus on how these things can cause death or how dangerous they can be. For me, I wanted to go for the lighter hearted Video which has a much nicer approach to the public information
theme. with this, the video I have chosen to create my leaflet for is the 'Pedal Safety Song'.

This video dates back to 1978, the same year the hits such as Saturday Night Fever and Grease came to the silver screens, the ‘Pedal Safety’ film aims to try to encourage cyclists to wear something visible through a catchy, light hearted song, even if it dose seem cheesy. Although the Pedal Safety song has defiantly become dated, cycling safety and the ‘Get yourself seen’ message is as pertinent today as it was then. This can be seen when looking at the statistics from 2004 where over 3,500 cyclists aged 11 to 16 were killed or injured on Britain’s roads. Thankfully, now days, while the need to be seen is still needed, 2015 saw little over 100 cycling fatalities which, while still high, are much lower than what the where used to be.
According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents it is statistically proven that nine out of ten drivers involved in fatal collisions with cyclists say they never saw them. Therefore higher visibility is a vital thing for safer cycling, even during the day. Findings have even suggested that fewer accidents occur at night, because greater numbers of cyclists wear fluorescent, reflective or simply brighter-coloured clothing. So, getting yourself seen, as song suggests, is an important safety precaution when cycling in the day or night.
The video itself has a very cheery tone of voice to try and get people thinking about the topic rather than making people worry about it. With the tone of voice of this video, while it can be aimed towards all cyclists, this advert seems to have more of a younger audience with the way the advert is made.

The videos lyrics: (key points)

Dark means danger, so get yourself seen.

At night, make it white.

In the dark, make it light.

But get yourself seen.

Take a brush to your bike.

Use some tape if you like.

But get yourself seen.

Make it big.

Make it bold.

Make it bright … to be sure that you’re seen.

Keep your lights bright and clean.

But get yourself seen.

Whether working for a living or just riding for your pleasure, let the world see

your life is something that you treasure and get yourself seen.

Make it big,

make it bold,

make it bright,

and get yourself seen.

And as daft as it it.... theres this one too. as bad as it is, there is the same message in this video as the pedal safety song

Studio brief 02: public information leaflet

Public Information Leaflet

For this new Brief, we've been asked to Produce a public information leaflet, which effectively communicates the keys facts, details, figures, statistics, data and/or knowledge you have identified within the Study Task 03.

The leaflet has been restricted so it should be no larger than 35.3 cm by 25cm and should communicate the information in a clear, understandable and engaging format, whilst being appropriate for your identified target audience. For the leaflets, we have to identify specific content in relation to your provided public information video from Study Task 03 considering how we could translate, manipulate, process and communicate the information gathered from the task. Content for work can often stem from your own interests, passions, obsessions and opinions. It is recognition of and an investigation into these personal concerns that help you to develop an individual voice within the creative industry.

What is a Public information film?

The films advise the public on what to do in a multitude of situations ranging from crossing the road to surviving a nuclear attack. They are sometimes thought to concern only topics related to safety, but there are films on many other subjects, including animal cruelty, protecting the environment, crime prevention and how to vote in an election or fill in a census form. Many of these films were aimed at children and were shown during breaks in children's programmes during holidays and at weekends. The general low-budget quality and the infamous static "crackle" before them gave them a Hammer Horror style aura. Some of them were quite terrifying and remained ingrained in the child's psyche well into adulthood, others were quite humorous and used comedy to show the dangers or ridicule the folly of those who ignore them. Many of them involved or were narrated by celebrities of the day.

Screens

When creating these, I found out how hard it is to try to find clips with movie characters pointing in a direction. Google didn't really help when searching for them, in the end, I ended up watching a few films to find some people pointing and seeing if any flatmates knew any. I am happy with the way these have came across, and after showing them to my peers, they seem to like the way they look and the idea off them showing up after you give you in your ticket was a very interesting and fun way to direct people to their screen.

Gif Example // realism

These are two different types of video clips (just gif's at the moment) I've been trying out. The first is just on a loop pointing once and replaying. while the second plays it, then plays it in reverse to have a some what smoother look to it. for the videos, the second one seems to flow better than the first and looks like it will fit better when on a screen when its played.

Cineworld realisms to gain a rough idea of how they will work when heading to the screen. Unfortunately, due to technical issues, I could not mock up an animated version of this but I feel the general idea of how it will be received is portrayed.

Crit Group

“I like the concept behind this, would love to see it actually being used in

cinemas”

“While the screen design is rather simple, it works! it gets the info across very easily. I personally would like to get my photos take next to some of these”

“The second gif defiantly works better in my opinion”

"Very Interesting idea, would like to see it on a monitor to get a sense of how it would look at the cinema"

Evaluation

I have thoroughly enjoyed this project, while the final outcomes aren't your typical wayfinding system, I'm happy with the way they have came across. The concept of guiding people in different ways if a very interesting area of graphic design that I would like to work on again the future. I would have like to have taken this project further by full animating the scenes but due to technical issues I wasn't able to do this with in the projects time. While i was able to make gifs for one or two scenes, I would like to create the transitions from the posters to the scenes.  I’ll aim to create these during my free time though as I want to see this project fully finished.

Way-Finding ideas

Initial ideas (sketchbook)

(Going to apologise in advance for the bad handwriting on these sketchbook pages in advance)

Starting of , I wanted to gain a rough idea of some iconic movie characters. to do this, i went around and asked both peers on the course and people back at the flat to name a movie character. with this, the characters i got were: Buzz Light-year, Godzilla, Friday 13th Jason, Iron Man, Wolverine, Forest Gump, Jaws, Alien Predator, Dracula, ect. with these characters, the idea was to create a way-finding system around them. Something like E4's Slackers club. But due to the nature of the cinemas these days this idea just doesn't fit in with there sleek approach.

For this one, I was looking into trying to use different techniques on the already in place way finding they use for their screen numbers. At the moment, the just use back lit metal numbers in the cineworld font, VAG-Rounded. these where drawn up with the intention of having them placed on plains of glass above the screens doors. i also though about creating symbols for the films that were playing but after thinking about it, its be too much to do for the amount of films there are.
these ones are more, out there ideas. one of the ideas was based around the robots santander has for its home base in Madrid that guide people to there destination. while the other was aimed to have the screens doors open for you so you could see where to go when giving your ticket in. Unfortunately, if some people turned up late for the film then there is the problem of the doors opening and closing during the film which would cause the film goer's watching the movie to get annoyed.

the idea of this one was to make the walk to the films screen feel like walking on the red carpet buy having lights light up that will lead towards your screening. Started with basic party lights you would find in marquees as starters. while it would look welcoming, it doesn't fit in with the modern, slick theme that cineworld is going for in its new interiors. To work around it, the lights could be within the walls or even back light a sheet of metal with small holes in it.

These ones I did like the idea of. The concept started by having small bollard like items outside the doors of each screen that would light up once you gave your ticket to the ticket collector to show where to head to. But thinking about it, instead of installing these 'light up bollards' outside of every screen, why not use what's already there. Outside every screen is two sets of bins that are just sitting there. The idea to use these would to either have a screen on each of the bins faces or have a light light up insides of them to show people where to go.

Not gonna lie, I was playing the game portal with a friend of mine before sketching this one down. This one is based on the simplistic information boards within the game (example on the left). Its super simple design and easy to understand pictogram s would work well for the film. Each screen would have one outside and would have information such as what film it was, its poster, rating, its warnings ect. all of it would be cineworld's typeface and would be vinyl on a back lit piece of plastic.

This one isn't very interesting. its just a map of which screen it is on the reverse of the ticket. But thinking about it, once you get past the ticket collector guy, most people put the ticket in the pocket or bin it.

Again, this one is more of the, 'out there' ideas. the aim is to replace the typical paper tickets and it would be able to direct you to both the screen and your seat number. I didn't focus too much on this one but from a rough concept, it would vibrate // light up more as you were heading it the right way. once at your seat, you would plug it into the arm of your chair so there would be no problem of getting the wrong seat

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, out of these ideas, this one stood out to me. While seeing that cineworld was going more modern with its interiors, they have used more digital monitors and projectors around the interiors. With these becoming the norm with in these cinemas, these would be a great way to create a way-finding system. At the moment, these screens are used to display film posters. With this being a cinema, the idea was to use clips from films of people pointing in certain directions to direct people to their screens. With these screens they will change the from the posters that are already on them to the short clip of movie characters 'pointing' the people towards their movie screen.

Crit group

After talking to peers in crit groups, the two ideas that everyone seem to like was the screen idea as it could be made to be interactive for people were they could try and see if they can scan each pointing movie clip. The other was the bin idea but they said that if it was done, maybe combine it with the pointing idea.
