OUGD503 Studio brief 2 - Mubi Evaluation

Evaluation

I think these posters speak to our strength as a group, ive had some great feedback from my group going as far as saying "as Connell's graphic design skills have really been the spine of the professionalism of this project, and very much so towards these posters." which is always good to hear. But to be honest we worked really well as a group and its looking promising for future collaboration projects. I feel that the humour we incorporated within the project also comes across really well without them coming across as a joke, they likes of the posters and the advert look professional but there is that tongue in cheek irony underneath. This collaboration has really got me hooked on working as a group due to how well our dynamic worked. There where hiccups such as one of our team becoming incredibly ill and the other having to deal with family issues but weve combated this, made each of us feel like a vital part in the group. Without sounding big headed though, i felt like my leadership role really came into play here and boosted my confidence with working in a group.

Working on the posters was fun but i really enjoyed working behind the camera and in the editing side of the videos and photos. so much so, im already in talks with some film students in regards of a film project they are working on which is really exciting. This whole module has been a real big eye oener for what my practice could entail in the future. Im not stoping now that the module is over either, ive got back into doing self initiated projects again and some of which are paid work too.

Evaluation.

Even though this has been a small brief, ive really enjoyed it as its got me back into using illustration in my work as its something ive sort of been timid to do at uni. I know the drawing could use work, especial in the hands but its been a some what confidence boost in my own drawing abilities. I guess its the same situation as the transformers project ive been doing in terms of using illustration and its defiantly a path i want to keep using in future projects. i think ive been to focussed on working on computers straight away that ive been neglecting other aspects of design such as print. this brief has got me looking forward to OUGD505's traditional print project. Plus, its got me back into poster design work as ive sort of been steering clear from it for a while. I do think how ever that i need to look in to more research sources in general for these projects

Evaluation

I took this project at the start of responsive as it was one of the brief that nobody else was doing so that's why i took it, i thought it would be a fun challenge. Throughout the project though I was loosing the creativity i had at the start as there was other responsive briefs that i was properly enjoying. the more i worked on this one the more I felt burnt out. I cant put my finger on what was wrong with me with this brief but the more i worked on it the harder i found to work on it as the same level as the what i was putting into other projects. Don't get me wrong, i loved trying to come up with a new game but i found that taking over the actual graphic design i wanted to do for it. I think that this brief has gave me the kick i needed to fully plan out what i want out of my projects and to get more feedback to keep me on track. I enjoyed problem solving for a non graphic design isuue, defiantly something i want to continue in the future as it reminds me of my stone book project from before Christmas.

I think this might have been my weakest project ive worked on just because I couldn't get the traction to get fully invested in to the brief. I think it might have something to do with how ive been feeling in this second semester, i dont know but one thing i do know is that the rest of this module im happy with!

Box net

with the brief just starting to create a concept for a board game i decided to take it further and create a rough mock up for what the box of the game.

Colour not only plays a major role in making the box stand out on the shelf, it also conveys the games message and persuades consumers to actually buy the product. so for this packaging i wanted to portray a message of simplicity whilst also showing that the game is sociable, fun and evokes enthusiasm as i feel these are what i want the game to come across as. To portray this ive used the colour scheme of Orange and White for the the box (the box is beige as a stand in for white so it can be seen)

colour in pacakging research (link)

the pattern was created as a nod to who wants to be a millionaire which was one of the top selling board games for 18-25 year olds (when it was out) behind monopoly but i think it just over complicated the design and message. Plus it didnt have anything to do with the message of the game. one thing i considered was that how do people keep score of the game, most games don't have anything or if they do they have a notebook to write in. To combat this i considered having the white space being a dry-wipe board. better yet, coating the box in a hydrophobic spray as that allows maker pens to be used and rubbed of easily without leaving a mark, plus it will further the life span of the box

To get a feel for how it would look i created a quick mock up showcasing the design

3D render of whats inside the box

to create an idea for what would be inside the box Ive created a insert that allows the game to be played normal (plus, secretly play it with drink by storing a drink in the centre, similar to thew likes of ring of fire),

Card designs

For the cards i aimed to create something that would last a long time and as it being at parties there will be food and drink so the car itself would be coated with a Hydrophobic coating but to lower the chance of marks on the card, the colour scheme would have to be dark which also gives the game a sense of sophisticated mystery

some mock ups of the design using this idea. The simplistic star looking constellation that iv made for the cards os based on the orion belt shape. The distinctive pattern of Orion has been recognised in numerous cultures around the world, and many myths have been associated with it. It has also been used as a symbol in the modern world and i thought would fit in with the style and theme of the game

Final idea.

From the ideas that I came up with, i took them to my peers for advice and they sugested maybe having all of them in a sort of task game. i really liked the idea of having a task based game as it gets the whole party involved. So i settled on the idea of task master

Sort of a combination of the other ideas. The game would focus on being in teams and getting people from each side to participate it tasks similar to that of the Nintendo switch that's coming out. These Tasks would be from a range of activities such as rhyming till someone cant think of a word  to the likes of making a human chair with your team. the aim of this game would be to get people back into getting involved at parties, plus this would be a great way to break the ice between people meeting for the first time.

Facebook

through out this project we've communicated a lot over Facebook as it was really easy to talk about what we needed to do when we didn't see each other in university but to be honest we saw each other on most days plus we had every Monday morning and Wednesday afternoon to basically go over what we had all did that week.

using messenger was a great way to give each other feedback on what we've made plus our time management was enhanced with it as we can literally ask to meet up on the day and see if any of us are free to meet up

Deadline (again)

with this delay on D&ADs end. We didn't really take advantage of the extra week we had on the brief, as we were pretty satisfied with what we'd done anyway, so we decided to use the extra time to focus on other commitments.

We had no real hiccups in the submission, aside from a 100 word summary of the project which I only had about 15 minutes to produce before the deadline!

Overall I think the brief went really well. I'm pretty happy with the products we made and the group worked really well together as a team. I think the thing we did well was plan out each other's roles thoroughly enough that we were all 100% aware of what we had to do at all times.

The proper deadline has come again weve submitted now without a hitch.

100 word sumery:

The driving message behind our campaign was the idea that ‘sometimes less is more’, which we think fits in perfectly with the ethos of MUBI and the content it provides. To drive MUBI’s message of not taking itself seriously we’ve incorporated humour into all the posters, gifs and adverts through the photoshoots taken for each mediums that get the public engaged within each of them. For us as well, we have proposed that MUBI collaborate with the UK film charity INTO FILM to further the brand and expand the charity’s horizons to become worldwide.

Deadline?

Once the deadline for the submission came we where ready, but D&AD wasn't by the looks of things. Apparently this happens every year and now we've got to wait for a week

Charity work

A driving point for our project was having Mubi give back to the community to further its name as a service that people can trust. We believe having the company support the charity Into Film which helps teachers and educators to achieve a wide range of effective learning outcomes in their use of film. Their programme includes a network of extra-curricular film clubs, resources for use in clubs and in the classroom, training opportunities, a cinema-based film festival and their annual Awards. It has been designed to meet the needs of all four nations within the UK. While Into Film is UK based, having it partnered with Mubi would allow it to grow to be known around the world and would allow anyone to be involved with great movies.

Gifs

On the tail of working on the advert with Isaac, we deiced that some of the video footage we got from the photo shoot would work really well as repeated gifs that would portray the same message as our theme. the gifs are to be used within the Facebook messenger Giphy as a cheap ad campaign to get peoples attention when they send messages to each others using the service.

(for some reason blogger didnt like the gifs i was trying to load so ive had to up load them as videos. just have to imagine that their gifs)

Our gifs are designed to be used on social media sites like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Many users on social media don’t generally have a massive attention span while scrolling through their news feed, so we made the gifs short and snappy to encourage people to stop scrolling by and focus on the short animation for a few seconds. We didn’t want to overcomplicate these animations as they wouldn’t be as engaging in the context of a Facebook feed or Instagram adverts. The repeating nature of these gifs allow the scenes that there depicting to show how extravagant the situations are.

Advert

During the project while Isaac was working on the advert he contacted me and asked if we could work on it together as we where running out of time as the deadline was looming in fast. so me and Isaac had spent many hours over the weekend editing together our video for YouTube and it's finally ready in time for the deadline on the Wednesday

The video isn't perfect and given more time I'd definitely take more time to edit it to a more professional standard, to fix some of the issues with pitch and a couple of abrupt cuts between some of the footage. But to say were both pretty remedial on After Effects, I'm really happy with what we've managed to pull off here. The advert is designed to be placed in an ad spot before a YouTube video, so we used a catchy, interesting song to capture viewer interest, and a clip from the enigmatic Samuel L Jackson to snare anyone who was considering skipping (would you interrupt Sam Jackson halfway through a sentence? I thought noT)
Matt has uploaded the file to his Vimeo account, but I've embedded the original MP4 file below.

Posters

Once we had completed the shoot, we sifted through the photos uploaded them to OneDrive. We then went away and agreed to look through all of the images and pick our favourite images from each shoot. Weirdly a lot of the pictures we all picked were the same so we didn't really have any issues in choosing which ones to use. once everyone chose their favourites, i went about getting the posters ready. This was the first time i really had a go at editing image and I thoroughly enjoyed it as its been able to develop a new skill.

The posters for submission for the MUBI brief. the group as a whole really like the posters, I think the concept behind the 'Less is More' campaign really works well for the brief and I think we've executed them really well as well. In the end, we decided to create a tonne of posters for the campaign, some in portrait and some in landscape, as we felt having that diversity would allow them to be more readily available to be transferred to other applications (social media, billboards etc) rather then being specified to limited specs for a poster. We still made sure the dimensions we used were within the guidelines set by MUBI in the brief package

(image below was made by matt as a way to see how they will look)

Photoshoot

Our photoshoot went really well, we got just over 600 photos to choose from over a full day of shoots. Our ideas for "Less Is More" worked a lot better in practice that we actually thought it would, it was really funny to see those ideas in practice and off paper. it even had us laughing at setting some of the scenes up. to help us with the photoshoot though was josh as he had much more experiance in this feild

We achieved the main visual ideas we wanted to, using props to make situations purposely over the top. Moving forward from here isaac's responsibility in the group is focusing on the movie clips we've been collecting, editing them into a comprehensible state that we can manipulate them in, and writing a script for the 30 second advert designed to go before a YouTube video.

Me and Matt are working on making physical posters for the advertising campaign, designed to go inside magazines, on bus stops, and other tangible places in the real world, as opposed to the advert I'm responsible for that will only really exist online. Unfortunately after the shoot Matt had some family issues so from then on it was mainly just me and Isaac working on the project now but we are complacently aware of the situation and were more than happy to help where we can.
