Evaluation.
Even though this has been a small brief, ive really enjoyed it as its got me back into using illustration in my work as its something ive sort of been timid to do at uni. I know the drawing could use work, especial in the hands but its been a some what confidence boost in my own drawing abilities. I guess its the same situation as the transformers project ive been doing in terms of using illustration and its defiantly a path i want to keep using in future projects. i think ive been to focussed on working on computers straight away that ive been neglecting other aspects of design such as print. this brief has got me looking forward to OUGD505's traditional print project. Plus, its got me back into poster design work as ive sort of been steering clear from it for a while. I do think how ever that i need to look in to more research sources in general for these projects

OUGD503 film society poster
Final poster evaluation
Taking on the feedback that i got on the poster designs, ive added the logo of the lca film society and the time of the film on it. its been added in a way that keeps with the minimalist aesthetic that the poster is going for so it dosn't give any of this amazing film away. If this poster was chosen to be shown for the showing of the film then i would get it screen printed onto the Japanese paper stock that i ordered for the OUGD505 studio brief 1 project.

Poster Development
working on the concept of the seven sword wielding samurai, i wanted to make the poster simple in the fact that it allows the silhouette of the samurai to grasp the eye of people looking at the poster. The red and white are keeping to Japanese poster norms whilst also having a simple aesthetic that hides a lot of detail
Feedback
The red sun on the white background really draws you in and makes the character standout even more. me personally i preferthe end one as the shilloete has you guessing if it is seven people or a seven armed man
it looks good but the final poster needs the LCA film society logo and the date/time on it
add some red shaddow to the drawing to really make it pop
This would look so cool as a screenprint

Development
After talking with my peers, the idea i was to go forward with was the main character holding seven swords. I took to drawing him out but because i wanted his limbs to look right, i used the Vitruvain Man ratio from Leonardo Da Vinci to add the extra limbs to body shape. With this template made, i went about sketching around the shape to start adding the character to it. as a whole i'm happy with how it came out but i hate the hands. Its safe to say i'm no illustrator

Idea generation
After looking at japanese movie culture and the art history of the period i've begun to sketch up some ideas, one of the first designs i liked was having a character on the poster holding 7 swords to showcase the cast of the film. another was to have the image of the main samurai ToshirĂ´ Mifune shown within the reflection of the seven swords across the poster. One aspect from the film that I liked the idea of working with was the flag the seven samurai use within the movie which was made up of 6 circles and a triangle. this design would be something that people who have seen the film would have people who have seen the film know what it was about.

Poster Research
Movie posters from japan normally follow the same pattern of having red text on top of a white background with the image of the film in the center. This colour scheme seems to be based off of the Japanese flag and its seen across most of the film posters from the same area from time the seven samurai was released. While the film posters have a photograph element to them, I wanted to dabble in a more illustrative path as its something that ive not done in a while.
Japan has been subject to sudden invasions of new and strange ideas followed by long periods of minimal contact with the outside world. Over time the Japanese developed the ability to absorb, imitate, and finally assimilate those elements of foreign culture that complemented their aesthetic preferences
Painting is the preferred artistic expression in Japan, practiced by amateurs and professionals alike. Until modern times, the Japanese wrote with a brush rather than a pen, and their familiarity with brush techniques has made them particularly sensitive to the values and aesthetics of painting
Japanese Jomon Period
The Jomon Period is the earliest historical era of Japanese history which began around 10,000 BCE. the art from this period is really something as japan had no contact with the outside world at this point, The art that was made was mainly ceramics and sculptures but the patterns on them are something that really interests me. they almost look sci-fi in nature. its even inspired the latest zelda game with these aesthetics

The Film for the poster
The poster design ill be working on is for the classic movie, the seven samurai. This was one of the many films i used to sit down with my dad and watch when i was younger. The film follows a samurai who answers a village's request for protection after he has fallen onto hard times. the samurai gathers six others to help him teach the people how to defend themselves from bandits who attack the vllage, and the villagers provide the soldiers with food. A giant battle occurs when 40 bandits attack the village.
