OUGD603 Brief 7: Research

Pixel art history / Designers research

Pixel art is a type of digital art where the artists specify the location of individual pixels, which are built up to create intricate scenes, game backgrounds, characters, and 3D effects, all with a limited colour pallet. Developing this artwork doesn't require photo editing knowlage and a load of other fancy equipment, just a lot of time to bring the art

Economic use of pixel art was born out of necessity. The famous example is Super Mario's mustache only has one because that was the only way, at the time, to clearly define his nose separately from his mouth.

Those limitations have long-since ceased to exist. Any modern game that employs a pixel art style today is likely doing so strictly for aesthetic reasons. Many indie devs are accused of preying on my generation's nostalgia with their over-use of the chunky retro look. This is said to be why people love pixel art as much as they do due to the style playing on the nostalgia that people have from their childhood.

One of the biggest examples of cross-cultural success with pixel art is undoubtedly the German pixel art group eBoy. eBoy's incredibly dense and detailed isometric pixel cityscapes have been featured in major ad campaigns from Coca-Cola, MTV, Honda, and plenty more. Many of their original illustrations are also sold as printed posters which are always well received by consumers.

Pixel Jeff

Based in Taipei, Taiwan, Pixel Jeff has been making pixel art since 2013, usually creating work inspired by movies, video games and animation. his piece on the latest star wars film rouge one really interested me for its detail it portrays while also keeping it realitivly simplistic. However, the way he dose add detail is really interesting and maybe a way i can add it within my work
