OUGD603 Brief 2: Iron Giant Evaluation

Evaluation

I would compare this project to be very similar to that of the giant robot fight project that I did before this due to it being in the same style and gained the same level of praise. Both of these projects has just fuelled my desire to further my skill set in this area of illustration and develop my own practise from this.

OUGD603 Brief 2: Iron Giant Final Outcome and Feedback

OUGD603 Brief 2: Iron Giant Development

Development

From the research it was clear that I would have to focus on the Iron Giant and as my more simplistic Pixel art style, the Megabot fight is what they wanted.  I felt like it was easier to showcase the scale of the giant rather than the relationship between the two characters. The beauty of the Iron Giant is that he has a very easy silhouette to recreate in this Pixel art sytle and he doesn’t have any complex colour schemes which meant he was easy to recreate in this.  To show off his scale, I added trees to the design which prove more difficult to get right without making them look like they were made on Microsoft Paint. The hardest part for this poster was trying to recreate the Iron Giant logo in the Pixel style.  It proved too hard to do at the scale I was using the Pixels so we settled for using the original logo from the film which worked just as well.To develop it even further, I animated it in the same way that was done for the Megabot fight which makes it look like he is standing idle.  Having all this on a white background really makes the design pop off the page.

OUGD603 Brief 2: Iron Giant Research

Research

Most pieces of fan art for this film puts emphasis on either the relationship between the Iron Giant and the child Hogarth or the sense of scale that the giant has in the film.  As well as looking at fan art of the Iron Giant, I also looked into other posters that focus on the area of nostalgia which prioritise showing off the characters of the film in whatever style their poster has incorporated.  All these posters focus on tugging at the memories of people who are fans of these films.

OUGD603 Brief 2: Iron Giant Poster Target Audience

Target Audience

This project for me is a love letter to people who grew up with this film as it came out back in the 90s.  For this reason, the target audience would be aged between 18 – 30+.  The nature of this audience means that for this project to work, the final outcome would have to have a sense of collectability to it in order to get fans involved with it.

OUGD603 Brief 2: Iron Giant Poster

Brief

From the giant robot fight, I was contacted by someone on Illustration to create a movie poster in the same style for the Iron Giant film with the potential for doing this for more films.  Iron Giant was one of my favourite films when I was younger so I was more than happy to work on this project.
