Type Setting
Study task 4
The Difference between Legibility and Readability:- Legibility is when the text is clear enough to read
- Readability is the ease in which the reader can understand the text. this can be effected by: Kerning/Leading/Type size/Hieracy
Task
I've chosen this fish and chip shop's take away menu to
Keeping to its original colours, I've edited the text to make it much easier to read by changing the way the prices are labeled so it flows nicer and better to understand. I think this way makes the the take away menu more legible to consumers.

Studio tas 3 - Drawing the Detectives
Drawing the Detectives
Using our developing understanding of colour theory and typographic design/usage, we are tasked to produce a graphic representation of our given Agatha Christie novel as part of the Guardians celebration of what would have been the authors 125th birthday.
GIven Novel
Cat Among the Pigeons
Plot Summery
‘Hope nobody here had nothing to hide,’ said Miss Springer, the new Game Mistress at Meadowbank to her colleagues at the beginning of the summer term. Days later the school matron and the Deputy Head found her dead from a single bullet at the girls’ school Sports Pavilion.
Unpopular she might have seemed among the staff and the pupils, her murder was a shock. Then the second murder occurred at the same premises. Clearly, there was something in the new building the murderer had been looking for.
Julia Upjohn, one of the pupils , worked out what it was. Nonetheless, instead of going to the police she went to Hercule Poirot for help; his being a friend of her mother’s friend. Unbeknown to Julia, Mrs. Upjohn happened to recognise a killer when she took her daughter at the start of the term.
In the meantime, a pupil vanished hours before the second killing. The niece of Emir Ibrahim – a ruler in a small rich country in the Middle East- was picked up by a chauffeur-driven limousine at school for a weekend with her uncle but never returned.
Two murders and a kidnap in a term were more than enough for parents. With its future hanging on a thread Poirot raced with time to realise who was the cat among the pigeons. Yet, was he quick enough to prevent another murder?

Responses
Book cover for cat among the pigeons playing on the when Johnson and Chadwick discover the body near the start of the book whilst also playing on the books title cat among pigeons. After asking many people one what colour comes to mind for a cat among the pigeons a vast majority said a light blue while some said a dark green. I decided to go down the blue route and create this simplistic book title. Eventually, after many experimentations I decided on which ones where the best:
I preferred the left-hand image, whilst its not much different, the corners really make the cover look better in my opinion. With the final design chosen all that was left to do was upload it up onto the Guardian's webpage along with everyone else's.

Study task 2 How do you read? Colour relativity
Colour 2
For this task we were asked to write our least favourite colour. I didn't really have a worst colour but after thinking about it, I chose this one due to it straining my eyes at times,
Chosen colour: Yellow
Reasoning: I've never really used yellow in my work. for some reason though, looking at yellow on screen and sometimes on prints, it strains my eyes. even the Yellow used on the word Yellow up above is hard for me to look at. Hopefully after this study task, ill be able to use yellow more often.
Yellow Pantones
A range of more pleasing yellows. (these ones a much better to look at and aren't eye straining)
Whitney Analasis
"Whitney is the museum of American art and they presented the last re-branding work consisting in a light ‘W’ that can be flexible in shape.
When checking the design process on the website it is appreciable that the theory is a bit contradictory, as they claim the design is complex, since it is a zigzag but it looks very minimalistic and simple. Another interesting fact in the process is that they proof how the spaces in the ‘W’ can be used as a container for images and text. In the video presentation the logotype is portrayed as a very flexible and adaptable element carried around the screen with a very suitable modern music played with cellos and other instruments and elements.
The members of the group agreed that the design process looks rushed, unfinished, like it was made in a work document. The layout of the images were very inconsistent and proved some other negative points with these examples, like that the logo is not as flexible as it looked in the presentation. It is a logo that needs a justification and might work only as a poster, but not with an extensive amount of text."

Logotype Evaluation
Evaluation
This was an interesting projects with the limitations of just using type for our logo designs but it was an enjoyable one. I do have to admit that being given these limitations it proved to be a little more challenging than expected but all in all it was great for learning how to use adobe illustrator effectively as it’s a program I unfortunately never really used much before. It was great seeing how everyone attacked this brief though, while my outcome had more of a simplistic approach to that of some other people’s rebrands, I think that overall it works for the company I was rebranding. Thanks to this project, I’ve been able to gain more confidence in discussing my ideas in groups and to have a go at online graphic design website such as DesignCrowd. I look forward to more projects like this in the near future to be able to further my design skills.
Logotype Applications
Menu Redesign
For the logo redesign, i wanted to re-create the restaurant’s menu so that it fits with the new logo. After going to a bunch of restaurants in and around Leeds to find out how they have done their menus I got a rough idea of what seemed to be trendy. There was a restaurant called Revelation that had their menus on wooden clipboards I was taken to that looked very trendy. This seemed to have worked quite well as the place always seem to be full of students and I thought that it fitted in with the style the rebrand was in. So, the menu has been created with the intention to keep the font style used for the logo and keeping the colour of the rebrand. For the brief I created a design for this and made the starter menu so that we can get a feel for what it might look like. If browns wanted to use this rebrand then other menus such as drinks and deserts will be in the same style.Other Uses
